Magnificent Red Rock Hills of St. George UtahThe city of St. George Utah is a vision realized. More than 140 years ago Mormon Pioneer leader Brigham Young envisioned the area having a gleaming white temple in the center of town and a community of 30,000 residents. The temple was completed in 1877 at a cost of $800,000, and in 1992 the predicted number of residents was met. Today there are more than 60,000 residents living in St. George itself and upwards of 105,000 people living within Washington County, Utah.

Originally, 309 families where sent by Brigham Young to begin a farming community that would supply the Civil War burdened country with much needed cotton, silk and wine. The person selecting the families to settle the area was George A. Smith and it was for him the city was named. These pioneer families had initially come to Utah from several southern states. They dubbed the area Utah’s Dixie.

Although farming is popular throughout the county, the city of St. George has grown into tourist destination. Being located in the southwestern corner of Utah, St. George has great weather all year long. Winter temperatures seldom fall below the mid-50s, making the area a golfers dream. While summer temperatures may climb into over 100 degrees, the surrounding area is filled with cool canyons and streams to explore. Zion National, Snow Canyon State Park, the Pine Valley Mountains and the Mohave Desert are all located within an hour of St. George.

For those more interested in air-conditioned fun St. George has several shopping malls, antique stores, museums, movie theaters, restaurants and day-spas.

These attractions, along with the warm winter weather, have contributed to the cities growth as a “Snowbird” community. Those looking to get a way from the cold winters found in other areas of the country, flock to St. George in mid-October each year. The city is also home to a large retirement community, who also enjoy the climate and other area attractions.

The city of St. George has the largest state of the art hospital in the region. Completed in 2003 the Dixie Regional Medical Center is a 420,000 square-foot facility with 132 acute inpatient beds. It is also the community's emergency care facility. The old medical facility is being converted into a rehabilitation center, women’s care center, Newborn Intensive Care Unit and fully accredited Cancer Center.
